Captain Cook’s visit in 1778 marked the start of a bustling trade centre, attracting explorers and traders from all over the world. For over a decade, Friendly Cove was a hub for alliances and trading of furs and goods, led by Chief Maquinna.
Today, Friendly Cove represents the Mowachaht/Muchalaht people’s identity and heritage and symbolises resilience and cultural exchange. It remains a focal point for community gatherings, ceremonies, and celebrations, showcasing the enduring spirit of its people.
