History
Welcome to Yuquot, the ancient Mowachaht village nestled on Nootka Island, where the spirit of our community thrives. Our roots run deep in this land, echoing the wisdom passed down through generations. Here at Yuquot, we extend a heartfelt greeting to all who venture to explore our heritage and culture.
Yuquot, known as Friendly Cove to outsiders, has welcomed travellers from distant shores for centuries. Captain Cook’s historic visit 1778 marked the beginning of an era of exploration and exchange. Despite the passage of time, Yuquot remains a beacon of hospitality, inviting visitors to experience the warmth of our community.
Where The Wind Blows From All Directions
Yuquot, also known as “Where-the-wind-blows-from-all-directions,” is the heart of our governance and spirituality on Nootka Island. With a history spanning thousands of years, this sacred site embodies our connection to the land and sea. Thirteen Mowachaht family groups once called Yuquot home, each contributing to the vibrant tapestry of our community.
Embraced by the winds and waves of Nootka Sound, Yuquot stands as a testament to the harmony between humans and nature. Our ancestors revered this island’s abundant resources, from the rocky shores to the towering forests. Today, we honour their legacy by preserving our traditions and caring for the land.
