Mowachaht / Muchalaht Culture

Welcome to the ancestral, traditional and unceded territory of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation. Located on the west coast of what is known now as Vancouver Island, both of our nations amalgamated to become one strong nation living and sharing one territory. Our haḥuułi (territory) encompasses the Nation’s centre, known as Yuquot, situated in Nootka Sound. and has thrived for generations beyond recorded history.
Our Nation has always had a deep connection to the land and sea. For thousands of years, our people have depended on the ocean, rivers, and forests to sustain our way of life. Our ancestors were skilled whalers, fishermen, and traders, and our territory was a hub for commerce and cultural exchange.
Within our haḥuułi, the ḥaw’iih (chiefs) held the responsibility to manage access, and entire village sites were under the ownership of the ḥaw’ił (chief) of the local group residing there.As members of the Nuu-chah-nulth nation, we hold steadfast to our core values of Hisukʔis cawaak (Everything is one), ʔiisaak (Respect with caring), and ʔuuʔaaluk (Taking care of). These values guide us in all matters and remind us of the importance of our connection to the land and each other

Where The Wind Blows From All Directions

Yuquot, also known as “Where-the-wind-blows-from-all-directions,” is the heart of our governance and spirituality on Nootka Island. With a history spanning thousands of years, this sacred site embodies our connection to the land and sea. Thirteen Mowachaht family groups once called Yuquot home, each contributing to the vibrant tapestry of our community.

Embraced by the winds and waves of Nootka Sound, Yuquot stands as a testament to the harmony between humans and nature. Our ancestors revered this island’s abundant resources, from the rocky shores to the towering forests. Today, we honour their legacy by preserving our traditions and caring for the land.
