Mountaineering
Experience the adventure of a lifetime by climbing Elkhorn Mountain, the second-highest peak on Vancouver Island, fondly known as the “Strathcona Matterhorn.” Tackle the classic North West Ridge route, first conquered by an Alpine Club expedition led by A.O. Wheeler in 1912.
This climb is a true challenge, with over 1800 meters of elevation gain from the valley to the summit. As you ascend, you’ll navigate exciting low-fifth-class climbing sections. The reward? Breathtaking views of Mount Colonel Foster, Kings Peak, and Rambler Peak are all set against the stunning and remote landscape of Strathcona Provincial Park.
Kings Peak offers an unforgettable 19km round-trip hike through lush forests, past a half-dozen waterfalls, and up sub-alpine gullies and scrambles to its open rocky peaks. Enjoy spectacular Elk River Valley views and ample ridgeline camping opportunities. While it can be completed as a day hike or an overnight trip, many hikers prefer a relaxed 3-day adventure to savour the experience fully.
